Die Wahre Art [2000]

Piano Concerto, written for the Radio Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Péter Eötvös and Gerard Bouwhuis, piano.

Gerard Bouwhuis operates a set of four digital reverb processors, each capable of placing any input tone on ‘infinite reverb’ until he either fades out a tone or a stacked sound, or stops it abruptly. He controls these processors with twelve pedals. The notes input into this system are from the first 25 measures of Webern’s Symphony opus 21, thus forming a cantus firmus, which is stretched across all movements with an exactly calculated delay.

The parts:

  1. Chaconne I
  2. Scherzo I
  3. Chaconne II
  4. Scherzo II
  5. Cadenza
  6. Choral
